MARK 1 AND MARK 2 DIFFERENCES

Here are some differences between the Mark 1 and Mark 2 machines:

The top assembly of the Mark 2 will fit on the Mark 1 pedestal.
A larger heavier cabinet base unit is available for the Mark 2.
The Mark 2 serial numbers are preceded by MT (Mark Two).
The Mark 2 machines have bellows fitted to protect the ways, and to protect the vertical height adjustment screw.
The Mark 2 machines have metal dust protectors at each end of the table.
The Mark 2 machines have a rack lock/friction screw on the rack feed spindle.
The Mark 2 machines have a locking lever to lock the height adjustment, rather than just a nut as on the Mark 1.
Both the cross slide dial and the vertical height adjustment dial are graduated.
Both the cross slide feed screw and the vertical height adjustment feed screw are operated by proper ball handles.
The Mark 2 spindle is longer than the Mark 1 spindle at the wheel end.
The Mark 2 belt guard has two knurled knobs that facilitate easy removal for belt changes/adjustments.
The Mark 2 belt guard locates on two studs, and each stud is attached to a hexagon spacing pillar, and the hexagon pillars are attached to the machine casting.
The Mark 2 machines may have double pulleys, to provide two spindle speeds of 4000rpm and 6000rpm. The double pulleys are crowned pulleys and carry the conventional flat belt.
The flange on the spindle may have a locating hole to accept the stud that appears on the newer grinding wheel flanges.
The motor mounting assembly consists of a simpler single plate, rather than the four mounting pieces on the Mark 1 machines.
The light has been repositioned and is now fixed to the spindle casting that rises and falls, instead of on the fixed casting.

It is common to see Mark 1 machines that have been partially adapted with a few Mark 2 parts.

↓ (14-11-12) These height scales sold for 4 pounds on ebay.
Theses were described as:
''These are new and unused height scales as fitted to the mk2 tool and cutter grinder. They make setting the wheel height much faster and accurate. They were never fitted to the far more popular mk1 machine. All you need to do is set the spindle to the same height as the centres and the attach the scale with zero in line with top of the elevating arm casting. The scale is no use without a height setting chart so I will enclose a photocopy with each scale. Two scales are shown in the photo you are purchasing one scale either metric or imperial. Please specify which you require.''

↓ Mark 2 (08-01-11) For auction on the Apex auction website.
Serial Number = MT 130
The machine is located in West Sussex.
It comes with a lot of tooling, a lot of which have been home made to suit the jobs in hand.

↓ Mark 2 (08-01-11) Lot 43 appeared on the Apex auction website (Meggit Avionic Auction).
There is no badge on this one. Why does that happen?
The machine is located in Dudley.
It comes with a good lot of tooling in a very nice tall slim cabinet.
I like this one.

↓ Mark 2 - Notice the absence of the locking lever on the vertical height adjustment locking bolt.
Notice the simplified motor mounting plate.
There is a good view of the bottom of the newer light unit.
You can see the low voltage lighting transformer at the rear of the pedestal. There is probably a mains isolator mounted below that and to the right.
Notice that the light is mounted on the spindle casting and moves up and down as the spindle is raised or lowered. The lamps on the Mark 1's are mounted on the fixed casting. They probably decided to reposition the light to move it out of the way of the new extraction hood.

↓ Mark 2 (20-02-11) Here are some close up pictures and dimensions of the pulley drive system.
Many thanks to Patrick Carlier from Belgium for supplying the pictures and dimensions.
Both pulley sections are 28.4mm wide.
The diameters of the pulleys at the crowns are:
High speed, spindle side = 38.00mm
High speed, motor side = 79.90mm
Low speed, spindle side = 49.40mm
Low speed, motor side = 69.10mm
The diameter of the spindle at the grinding wheel end is 0.5inch, with a 1/2 inch BSF left hand thread.
The diameter of the spindle at the pulley end is 5/8 inch, with a 1/2 BSF left hand thread.
The pulley itself is secured just like the wheel , with a 1/2 BSF left hand threaded nut. There are no keyways or setscrews. Ken Widdal has pointed out that it is odd that the thread on the pulley end of the spindle is a left hand thread.
The possible speeds are 4000 and 6000 rpm .

↓ Mark 2 (19-02-11) This one sold on ebay for 1068 pounds and was located in Oxford.
Here is how it was described by the seller:
"This is a very good example of the Clarkson tool & cutter grinder. It is the Mark II version, having the following advantages over the basic Mark I:-
- Mounted on a cabinet base (footprint 18 x 20"), giving greater stability and having three shelves providing good storage space for tooling, accessories, spare wheels and oddments.
- Two-speed belt drive to wheel, giving speeds of 4000 and 6000 rev/min. - Full belt guard.
- Table fitted with dust guards at both ends.
- Clearly graduated dials with proper ball levers for both in-feed and wheel height adjustment.
- All controls, dials and adjusters satin chrome plated, avoiding corrosion.
- Concertina bellows on cross-slide and height adjustment leadscrew to protect from grinding dust.
This particular machine has three very useful modifications:-
- The swivelling lower table base is mounted on a close-fitting stud with lock nut and is graduated on the periphery to allow accurate setting of the table angle in relation to the wheel head. This also allows radii to be accurately ground without a separate attachment.
- The upper part of the compound table has an additional pivot hole, allowing longer work to be accommodated.
- Locking screws have been fitted to the table and cross-slide slideways.
The machine is in very good condition throughout. Both slideways have been refurbished and the leadscrew for the grinding head replaced, and the the machine has been little used since. It is fitted with a smooth-running single-phase motor that is controlled by a 'no-volt' switch, enabling it to be run from a standard 240 volt, 13 amp socket. An adjustable overhead work light with separate switch is fitted.
It is complete with a range of accessories, including two universal workheads and an Eclipse magnetic chuck.
A number of different types of grinding wheel are included. There is an illustrated Clarkson Operators Handbook.
This is a solidly built, but compact machine that is capable of very accurate work and is ready to be put to immediate use. I can assist with loading and have facilities to load onto a van with tail lift, or a small trailer. Alternatively, the work head could be taken off the cabinet (three bolts) and the two lifted separately into the back of an estate car.
Viewing welcome. Collection in person from Oxford/Swindon area."

The crowned pulleys provide two speeds. The flat belt rides on the top of the crown of the pulleys.

missing image

↓ There is an imperial height gauge fitted to this one.
missing image

↓ The tear drop shaped swivel plate has been machined and graduated.
The close fitting stud allows the plate to be accurately indexed. The seller claims the plate can also be swivelled to produce radii. I must try that some day.

↓ Mark 2 (19-11-11) For auction on the Go-Dove auction website.
Serial Number = MT 124
This one is badged "MARCH".
Going by the auction lot details this maybe a 1989 machine?
The machine has been overpainted in white. The accessories are the original colour.
The machine is located in Stourport.

Ken Widdall has contacted me and pointed out that the 2.1/2 inch base casting that the Mark 1 and Mark 2 machine normally sit on is not present on this March machine. He has a later Clarkson cabinet and it is similar to this cabinet. I assume that this is another cost saving measure. Losing the 2.1/2 inch cast iron base would have been a big saving. So, it looks like the March cabinet stands and maybe some later Clarkson cabinet stands, do not utilise the 2.1/2 inch base casting, whereas the earlier Clarkson cabinet stands do.
Also notice that the corners of this cabinet are straight 45 degree plates, whereas the early Clarkson cabinets have rounded corners.

(sorry the pictures are fuzzy)

The March machines have a black flexible halogen lamp unit, which runs off a low voltage transformer.

↓ Mark 2 - The height adjustment is locked in place by a bolt, instead of a lever, on this one. Some mark 2 machines have the locking lever and others do not.

Serial Number MT 1239 Clarkson International Tools Ltd.

Notice the neat starter switch on the top left of the pedestal.
The mains isolator is mounted on the rear of the pedestal.
I'm guessing here; it looks like there is a low voltage transformer to the left of the isolator. The light has been removed and the wires look like they have been cut where they exit the top outlet of the transformer.
You can see the 4 screws where the light should be. Notice that the light is mounted on the spindle casting and moves up and down as the spindle is raised or lowered. The lamps on the Mark 1's are mounted on the fixed casting. They probably decided to reposition the lights to keep them clear of the new extraction hoods hat were not present on the early Mark 1 machines.

↓ Mark 2
Notice the motor mounting plate which is very different to the Mark 1 arrangement. This assembly seems much more straightforward and less fiddly.
There is a blanking plate in the extraction hood (as per regulations).
The non-standard wing nuts on the side cover on the extraction hood enable quick removal of the side cover plate.

Look closely and notice that the main head casting has been considerably raised on 3 long studs.
There is also a rotary table/indexing affair and flood coolant. Now that's an idea, use a rotary table to index the job being ground. I would think the life of the RT would be considerably reduced if used on the grinder.

↓ Mark 2 (20-02-11) An odd Mark 2.
A machine was sold on ebay as a Mark 2. The buyer could not properly inspect the machine and did become doubtful about it when he went to pick it up. Due to health and the long distance he committed to the sale and paid for the machine and took it home.

↓ Here are some views of the spindle.
This one is odd.
The nameplate is clearly wrong.
The spindle is definitely a Mark 2 spindle, but the pulleys are wrong.
The shiny motor pulley is off a Mark 1.
I am not too sure about the spindle pulley. I would expect it to be more shinier than that if it had been in use (It may be steel and not aluminium). The spindle pulley has been made to fit the 5/8 inch spindle shaft of the Mark 2.
Both pulleys should be two speed pullleys.
The spindle housing does not look like it belongs to the main casting that it is attached to; it is a Clarkson part, but of a different age by the looks of it.

I was collecting tooling for my home workshop and I have owned this Clarkson MK II Cutter Grinder for some time, having stripped, cleaned and converted it to single phase before putting it into storage. It has a brand new 240 volt motor which has run for less than 15 minutes and a new starter with overload to match. As you can see from the pictures: it has a new belt and everything works as it should. There is a substantial amount of tooling including cutter holders, centre holders with new centres and adapter plates for other operations. It is the best tooled cutter grinder I have seen for sale. There are a number of cutting wheels but I have no idea of their history and as such cannot offer any guarantee that they are fit for purpose or safe in use, so unless you are a cutting wheel expert I suggest you discard them. I have now decided that having ground one cutter to test its operation (when the new motor was fitted), I unlikely to use it again and therefore offer it for sale. It is a very top heavy machine and I would recommend that the purchaser has a suitably tall trailer/van to fit it in and secure it during transport. The weight of it is 228 Kg (504 lb) and although I have an engine crane I cannot lift it higher than a few inches so tail lift collection is recommended.
