Myford ML7 - Carriage Stop or Apron Stop or Saddle Stop


This page shows a carriage stop for the Myford Ml7.

This is one of those things I wish I had made earlier. It is so useful, and I use it a lot.

The Carriage Stop is also known as a Saddle Stop, or an Apron Stop.
The device is used to stop the carriage at a set positon.

The device is helpful if you have to machine one or more parts to a defined length.
It is even more useful when used in conjunction with a chuck back stop.

The Carriage Stop comes in handy when turning plastic.
When turning PVC, the PVC swarf wraps around the workpiece, and if you are working up to a shoulder, the shoulder is difficult to see as it becomes obscured by the swarf. The Carriage Stop allows you to 'work blindly', and will stop you at the shoulder that you can't see.

↓ The Carriage Stop assembly consists of a Plate, a Bar Holder, and the Stop Bar.

The Bar Holder is fixed to the Plate by three M5 machine screws.
The Plate is fixed to the lathe bed using two M5 hex cap (socket head) screws.
An M6 socket grub screw, with a bent hex handle, is used to lock the Stop Bar.

↓ Two holes are drilled in the lathe bed beneath the headstock.

The holes are tapped M5.
The distance between the hole centres is 59mm.

The bed is cast iron, and it was easy to drill the holes fairly accurately using a battery powered drill.
I kept well clear of any obstacles and fixings in the headstock.

↓ The Stop Bar is a very good sliding fit in the Bar Holder. It does not wobble about at all.

Earlier I made a mistake. The original Stop Bar did not have the flat groove milled on it. As a result, when the hex socket grub screw was tightened down, the surface of the bar got marred by the end of the grub screw. Even though the surface was only slightly blemished it was enough to make the StopBar very awkward to move.

The end of the grub screw has been profiled to fit the slot in the Stop Bar.
To make the handle, I glued part of a hex wrench in the socket of the grub screw.
The bar is very secure when the grub screw is gently tightened.
