SOBA PRECISION VICE - A NEW SHORT HANDLE

Sometimes after spending an age setting up the Soba vice on the milling table I would find that vice handle would foul the lathe cross slide handle. I could get over the problem by using a spanner instead of the removable Soba vice handle but it was a bit awkward using the spanner. I have finally got around to making a smaller removable handle for the Soba vice.

↓ I cut up a 12.7mm thick bar, drilled a 14mm hole, and then marked up the square.

 

↓ It took an hour to file the hole square.

 

↓ Here is a trial fit on the vice. It is a good fit.

↓ I drilled a 10mm hole, slightly undersized, for the 10mm grip handle.
I centered the Vertex rotary table under the mill head.
I put a punch mark in the centre of the handle.
I located the punch mark under the mill head, using a point mounted in the milling chuck, and then clamped the handle to the rotary table.
Here you can see the punch mark being lined up with the centre of the Vertex milling chuck.

 

↓ I proceeded to mill a radius on each end of the handle.

↓ I pressed a 10mm bar into the undersized hole in the handle. The 10mm bar is an extremely tight fit and does not require glue or brazing.

↓ Here is the long vice handle fouling the cross slide handle.

 

↓ Here is the new short vice handle clearing the cross slide handle.
The handle also clears the milling table.

Now I can move on.
